What Is the Ohio Permit Test?

The Ohio permit test is the written knowledge exam required to earn a Ohio learner's permit. Administered by the Ohio BMV, it is based on the official Ohio driver handbook.

The Ohio BMV knowledge test for a Temporary Instruction Permit (TIPIC) has 40 multiple-choice questions covering motor vehicle regulations and traffic signs. You must answer at least 75% (30 of 40) correctly to pass.

You must also pass a vision test. The TIPIC must be held for at least 6 months before the driving test for teens under 18.

In Ohio, new drivers typically begin with a learner's permit at 15½ years old, required: 24 hrs classroom + 8 hrs driving, and log 50 hours (10 at night) of supervised driving over a 6 months permit hold before earning a provisional license. The Ohio BMV administers the knowledge test, permits, and driver's licenses statewide.
