There is no single, nationwide “DMV” or “DOT” driver licensing agency. Every U.S. state operates its own driver licensing authority, and those agencies go by a wide variety of names — from the familiar Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to state-specific names like Florida's DHSMV, Georgia's DDS, and Kentucky's Transportation Cabinet (KYTC).

No matter the name, these agencies all handle the same core duties: issuing learner's permits and driver's licenses, administering written knowledge and road tests, approving driver education and traffic school courses, and maintaining the official driving record used by courts and insurers.
