Alabama Adult Driver Education (Recommended Online Course)

Alabama does not require adult driver education. Adults 18 and older must pass the ALEA knowledge test (30 questions, 80% to pass — 24 correct), a vision test, and the road skills test to receive a full, unrestricted Alabama driver's license. This recommended online course is a supplemental study tool that helps you build the skills and knowledge to pass the tests. It is not a state-approved program and is not required.

The course features clear language, fresh graphics, fun videos, and interactive 3-D animations that keep you engaged and help you retain what you learn. It is 100% online and self-paced on any device. Completing it does not waive any ALEA requirement — you must still pass the knowledge, vision, and road tests.

You may qualify for an auto insurance discount with eligible auto insurance companies. The discount is not guaranteed — ask your insurance agent for details. This is a recommended supplemental course, not a state-approved Alabama driver education program.

Alabama's three-stage graduated driver license — Stage I learner's license at 15, Stage II restricted license at 16, and Stage III regular license at 17 — applies only to drivers under 18. Adults 18 and older bypass the Stage I and Stage II steps entirely and apply directly for a Stage III regular license by passing the ALEA written knowledge, vision, and road skills tests at an ALEA driver license office; this supplemental course does not change that adult path.
