You must be at least 15 years old to apply for a Georgia learner's permit. If you are under 18, a parent or legal guardian must consent and accept responsibility.
Study the Georgia Driver's Manual and pass the DDS knowledge exam — a Road Signs test and a Road Rules test, each with 20 questions and a 15-correct passing score. You must also pass a vision test.
If you are 16 or 17, complete a DDS-approved 30-hour driver education course plus 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a certified instructor (or 40 hours of parent-taught behind-the-wheel training). Online driver education is approved.
Log 40 hours of supervised driving — including 6 hours at night — with a licensed adult, and complete the Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program (ADAP) required for a license under 18.
Hold your learner's permit for at least one year and one day before applying for your Class D provisional license.
Receive your Class D provisional license at 16, which carries nighttime (midnight–5 a.m.) and passenger restrictions that ease in stages.
Your full, unrestricted Georgia Class C driver's license is issued at 18 when the GDL restrictions end.
