From your first learner's permit to a full Idaho driver's license, here's the general path most Idaho drivers follow. Always verify the latest requirements with Idaho ITD. Tap any step to expand the details.
At 14½, pass the Idaho ITD knowledge test — 40 questions, 85% to pass (34 correct) — and a vision test to receive your Supervised Instruction Permit (SIP). A parent or guardian must consent if you are under 18.
Complete an Idaho-approved driver training course — classroom instruction plus behind-the-wheel driving — required for all drivers under 17 before getting a license.
Hold your SIP for at least 6 months (while supervised) and log 50 hours of supervised driving — including 10 hours at night — with a licensed adult 21 or older.
After completing driver training and the supervised period, pass the Idaho driving skills test to receive your driver's license at 15. Drivers under 16 may not drive between midnight and 5 a.m. unless accompanied.
At 16, your full, unrestricted Idaho driver license is issued when the under-16 night restriction ends.
