How to Get a New Jersey Driver's License
From your first learner's permit to a full New Jersey driver's license, here's the general path most New Jersey drivers follow. Always verify the latest requirements with New Jersey MVC. Tap any step to expand the details.
At 16, enroll in a behind-the-wheel driver education program and apply for a New Jersey Student Learner's Permit, which requires 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction with a licensed driving instructor. If you are not enrolled in driver ed, you can apply for an Examination Permit at 17 instead.
Pass the MVC knowledge test — 50 questions with an 80% passing score (40 correct) — covering the New Jersey Driver Manual, plus a vision test.
Practice with a licensed adult (21 or older, with at least 3 years of driving experience) and log at least 50 hours of supervised driving — including 10 hours at night — on the Certification of Supervised Driving.
Hold your Student Learner's Permit (or Examination Permit) for at least 6 months with a clean record before applying for your probationary license.
Receive your probationary driver license at 17. You may not drive between 11:01 p.m. and 5 a.m. and may carry only one passenger unless accompanied by a parent, guardian, or adult over 21, with limited exceptions.
After holding your probationary license for one year with no violations, upgrade to a full, unrestricted New Jersey basic driver license at 18.
