Who Is This Course For?

Texas teens ages 14-17 and a qualifying parent or guardian who want to complete the state-required driver education course through the parent-taught program.

Course Overview

Texas requires all teens under 18 to complete a TDLR-approved driver education course before receiving a driver license. The parent-taught program (PTDE) lets a qualifying parent or guardian teach the course to their teen at home. The classroom portion must be underway before you can receive your learner license at 15. This DPS-approved course is 100% online and self-paced, and at the end you may take your official permit test with us instead of going into DPS.

After the learner license, teens complete behind-the-wheel practice and log at least 30 hours of supervised driving — including 10 hours at night — with a licensed adult 21 or older. Before the driving skills test, teens must also complete the Impact Texas Drivers (ITD) video program and present the certificate. You may also qualify for up to a 10% auto insurance discount with eligible insurers — ask your insurance agent for details.
