Maine Adult Driver Education (Recommended Online Course)

Maine does not require adult driver education. Adults 18 and older must pass the BMV knowledge test (30 questions, 80% to pass — 24 correct), a vision test, and the road test to receive a full, unrestricted Maine driver's license. This recommended online course is a supplemental study tool that helps you build the skills and knowledge to pass the tests. It is not a state-approved program and is not required.

The course features clear language, fresh graphics, fun videos, and interactive 3-D animations that keep you engaged and help you retain what you learn. It is 100% online and self-paced on any device. Completing it does not waive any BMV requirement — you must still pass the knowledge, vision, and road tests.

You may qualify for an auto insurance discount with eligible auto insurance companies. The discount is not guaranteed — ask your insurance agent for details. This is a recommended supplemental course, not a state-approved Maine driver education program.

Maine requires teens to complete an approved driver education course before — not after — a learner's permit at 15, and drivers under 21 must log 70 hours of supervised driving (10 at night) before a provisional license at 16 with a midnight–5 a.m. curfew and a no-passenger (except immediate family) rule for the first 9 months. Adults 18 and older skip the pre-permit driver education, the 70-hour supervised log, and the provisional stage, and apply directly for a full Maine license by passing the BMV knowledge, vision, and road tests.
