Alaska Adult Driver Education (Recommended Online Course)

Alaska does not require adult driver education. Adults 18 and older must pass the DMV knowledge test (20 questions, 80% to pass — 16 correct), a vision test, and the road test to receive a full, unrestricted Alaska driver's license. This recommended online course is a supplemental study tool that helps you build the skills and knowledge to pass the tests. It is not a state-approved program and is not required.

The course features clear language, fresh graphics, fun videos, and interactive 3-D animations that keep you engaged and help you retain what you learn. It is 100% online and self-paced on any device. Completing it does not waive any DMV requirement — you must still pass the knowledge, vision, and road tests.

You may qualify for an auto insurance discount with eligible auto insurance companies. The discount is not guaranteed — ask your insurance agent for details. This is a recommended supplemental course, not a state-approved Alaska driver education program.

Alaska's instruction permit is available at 14 — among the youngest permit ages in the United States — and teen permit holders must log 40 hours of supervised driving (10 at night or in inclement weather) and hold the permit 6 months before a provisional license at 16. Adults 18 and older skip that supervised-driving log and the provisional stage, and apply directly for a full, unrestricted Alaska license by passing the DMV knowledge, vision, and road tests.
