Who Is This Course For?

Iowa adults preparing for the DOT knowledge and driving tests who want a supplemental, recommended online driver education course. This course is not state-approved and is not required by the Iowa DOT.

Course Overview

Iowa does not require adult driver education. Adults 18 and older must pass the DOT knowledge test (25 questions, 80% to pass — 20 correct), a vision test, and the driving test to receive a full, unrestricted Iowa driver's license. This recommended online course is a supplemental study tool that helps you build the skills and knowledge to pass the tests. It is not a state-approved program and is not required.

The course features clear language, fresh graphics, fun videos, and interactive 3-D animations that keep you engaged and help you retain what you learn. It is 100% online and self-paced on any device. Completing it does not waive any DOT requirement — you must still pass the knowledge, vision, and driving tests.

You may qualify for an auto insurance discount with eligible auto insurance companies. The discount is not guaranteed — ask your insurance agent for details. This is a recommended supplemental course, not a state-approved Iowa driver education program.

Iowa issues an instruction permit at 14 and requires teen permit holders to log just 20 hours of supervised driving (2 at night) but hold the permit for a full 12 months before an intermediate license at 16 with a 12:30 a.m.–5 a.m. curfew. Adults 18 and older bypass the instruction permit's 12-month hold, the 20-hour supervised log, and the intermediate stage, and apply directly for a full Iowa license by passing the DOT knowledge, vision, and driving tests.
