Kentucky Driver's License Resources

Kentucky Teen Driver Education (Recommended Online Course)

Kentucky does not require driver education to get a learner's permit at 15 — you only need to pass the Kentucky KYTC knowledge and vision tests. This recommended, supplemental online course is not a state-approved course and is not required; it helps you build the essential driving skills, confidence, and safe driving habits you need to log your 60 hours of supervised driving, pass the KYTC road skills test, and become a safer driver. With clear language, fresh graphics, fun videos, and interactive 3-D animations, you'll stay engaged and retain the knowledge you need. You may also qualify for an auto insurance discount through participating insurance providers.

Who Is This Course For?

Kentucky teens preparing for the learner's permit at 15 and the KYTC road skills test who want a supplemental, recommended online driver education course. This course is not state-approved and is not required by the Kentucky KYTC.

Course Overview

Kentucky does not require driver education. To get a learner's permit at 15, you pass the KYTC knowledge test (40 questions, 80% to pass — 32 correct) and a vision test. You must then hold the permit for at least 6 months and log 60 hours of supervised driving — including 10 hours at night — with a licensed adult 21 or older before the road skills test for an intermediate license at 16. An intermediate license restricts driving between midnight and 6 a.m. and limits you to no more than one passenger under 20 (unless supervised by a driving instructor). A full, unrestricted Kentucky license follows at 17. This recommended online course does not change those KYTC requirements — it is a supplemental study tool that helps you build the skills and knowledge to pass the road test.

The course features clear language, fresh graphics, fun videos, and interactive 3-D animations that keep you engaged and help you retain what you learn. It is 100% online and self-paced on any device. Completing it does not waive any KYTC requirement, does not reduce the 6-month permit holding period, and is not a substitute for the 60 hours of supervised driving Kentucky requires while you hold your learner's permit.

You may qualify for an auto insurance discount through participating insurance providers — ask your insurance agent for details. This is a recommended supplemental course, not a state-approved Kentucky driver education program.
