Michigan Adult Driver Education (Recommended Online Course)

Michigan does not require adult driver education. Adults 18 and older must pass the SOS knowledge test (covering road signs and traffic laws), a vision test, and the driving skills test to receive a full, unrestricted Michigan driver's license. This recommended online course is a supplemental study tool that helps you build the skills and knowledge to pass the tests. It is not a state-approved program and is not required.

The course features clear language, fresh graphics, fun videos, and interactive 3-D animations that keep you engaged and help you retain what you learn. It is 100% online and self-paced on any device. Completing it does not waive any SOS requirement — you must still pass the knowledge, vision, and driving tests.

You may qualify for an auto insurance discount with eligible auto insurance companies. The discount is not guaranteed — ask your insurance agent for details. This is a recommended supplemental course, not a state-approved Michigan driver education program.

Michigan teens under 18 complete a two-part state-approved program — Segment 1 (24 classroom, 6 behind-the-wheel, 4 observation) to earn the Level 1 learner's permit at 14 years 9 months, and Segment 2 (6 classroom hours) before the driving skills test for a Level 2 license at 16. Adults 18 and older skip both segments, the Level 1 and Level 2 stages, and the 50-hour supervised log, and apply directly for a full Michigan license by passing the SOS knowledge, vision, and driving skills tests.
