Who Is This Course For?

Ohio teens 15 years and 5 months and older who need to complete the BMV-required classroom driver education course as part of the state's Graduated Driver Licensing process before receiving a probationary license.

Course Overview

Ohio requires drivers under 18 to complete a licensed driver training course consisting of 24 hours of classroom or online instruction and 8 hours of behind-the-wheel driving with a licensed instructor before a probationary license is issued. This BMV-approved 25-hour online course satisfies the classroom instruction portion of that requirement. You study anytime with a convenient 24/7 online course, learn at your own pace, and build the confidence you need to succeed.

To get started, you must be at least 15½ years old to apply for an Ohio Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card (TIPIC). You pass the BMV knowledge test — 40 multiple-choice questions covering motor vehicle regulations and traffic signs, with a 75% passing score — plus a vision test. After completing driver education and logging 50 hours of supervised driving (including 10 hours at night) on the BMV 5791 Fifty-Hour Affidavit, you hold the TIPIC for at least 6 months and pass the driving test to receive your probationary license at 16. For the first 12 months, driving is restricted from midnight to 6 a.m. and you may carry no more than one passenger unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. Your full, unrestricted Ohio driver license is issued at 18.

Prepare for the BMV permit test with free practice permit tests included with the course. You may also qualify for up to a 10% auto insurance discount with eligible insurers — ask your insurance agent for details.
